Look at lettering as part of the design
Choose one tin and trace the layout on paper without marking the object. Notice the largest word, the spacing and the relationship between text and illustration.
Compare it with another piece. Look for differences in letter shapes, borders and how the design fits around corners.
Write a short description using those visible features. Avoid dating an object from a single lettering style; designs can be reused or reproduced.
